For years I have been tinkering with computers and software, but rarely documented much. Sometimes I would do something genius, it works, yay!
Days, months, or even years later I would have to change something, or do it again, and I would have no clue anymore how I did it originally. Sounds familiair? Oh well, maybe you forgot when that happened?
Anyway, I hope to document these strokes of genius now here in this blog. For me hopefully this helps me remember things. For a wider audience this blog might be an idea what one can do, and how to do it.
Topics
Based on my current areas of interest, you might find topics related to:
- Gentoo Linux, the Linux distribution that I have been using for many years. In 2019 I started to contribute to Gentoo by writing wiki articles, and by proxy-maintaining some packages;
- Python, a programming language that I am teaching myself. With my original background of programming in Pascal, C, and assembler it is not that hard, although there are a few constructs that leave me quite puzzled. e.g. decorators;
- Krapplet, a password manager for Linux that I wrote in Python based on gnome-keyring and GTK3.
- Git, a version control system. I am still learning this, but use it to create pull requests for the proxy maintenance work on Gentoo's main tree, and for commits on Gentoo's user repository GURU and for the krapplet repository.

About me
I am married, Dutch and live in Germany.
Professional engagements:
- Software engineer at Mettler-Toledo: developing industrial automation solutions in Pascal and C, and firmware for weighing systems in Forth and assembler;
- CMG Wireless Data Solutions, which was acquired by Logica, which was in turn acquired by CGI. I was the lead developer for a Cell Broadcast Center, and was later managing professional services and customer support departments in Asia-Pacific and North America;
- Currently I am working at Oracle as a practice director for database and platform consulting services. My team and I provide companies assistance in configuring and managing their Oracle Databases, Oracle hardware like Exadata, the ZFS Storage Appliance, the Oracle Database Appliance (ODA), and of course Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). All views and statements made in this blog are my own, not Oracle's.
